As a window cleaner, one of the main questions I get asked often is ” what do you use for a cleaning solution? ” I reply that I use a commercial grade detergent but, I can give you some recipes for an effective homemade window cleaner. I usually accompany the recipe with some helpful window cleaning techniques.

The concoctions I will list were some of the very recipes I used when I was starting out. The techniques you will learn are simple, yet they will yield good results.

Dawn Dish Soap

That’s right! The same soap you use to wash your dishes can be used as a homemade window cleaner. It’s strong, safe, and smells great. There’s a reason many professional window cleaners use it in their buckets. It will cut right through finger prints, bird droppings, and even smokers haze. Just add a teaspoon per gallon of water, mix, then use a sponge to apply to your windows or mirrors. After gently agitating with a sponge, use a squeegee to clear away the soapy water

Vinegar And Rubbing Alcohol

Another great window cleaner is vinegar and rubbing alcohol. This solution is best used as a spray as it doesn’t provide the glide that Dawn does. Simply mix one cup of distilled water, one cup of white vinegar and three tablespoons of rubbing alcohol. Spray the mixture on your windows, mirrors, or even counters, then wipe off with a clean microfiber towel. This is a good window cleaning technique for a few windows, or just a touch up on your bathroom mirrors. For your whole house, I would recommend using a window cleaning applicator and a squeegee.

What I Use To Clean Windows

glass gleam 4 concentrated glass cleaner

Glass Gleam 4 is a super concentrated commercial grade glass cleaner

Like a lot of window cleaners, I started out using Dawn dish soap. After doing research and discussions with veteran window washers, I discovered Glass Gleam 4™. I like this cleaner as it has a pleasant smell, cleans glass extremely well, and does not leave glass with a static charge like Dawn can. This means windows stay cleaner longer. The initial money down can seem like quite a bit but one ounce will yield three gallons. As a homeowner, a quart can last for years. If you would like to order yours, I find ABC Window Cleaning Supply is pretty reasonably priced and fast on delivery.
