Pella french pane windows installed on home in Palm Desert, California

Cleaning french panes can be a daunting task without the right tools or technique

Are you one of the lucky people whom owns a home with french pane windows? These windows and doors can add elegance and style to a home. They can add a look of infinite size when viewed. They can also be a pain in the neck to clean. All those nooks and crannies that collect dust, those mullions that can separate from the glass allowing water to drip behind the grids and stain. There is hope though, with the right tools and strategy, you can knock out cleaning in heartbeat. As a professional window cleaner here in the Redlands and La Quinta area, french pane windows are quite common. I have developed two techniques that have served me well for years.

The Custom Cut Squeegee Method

The custom cut squeegee method is one of the most common techniques used by professional window cleaners

Tools needed:

  1. Squeegee
  2. Hacksaw
  3. Tape measure
  4. Metal file
  5. Pencil or marker
  6. Screwdriver

First thing you need to do is measure your windows and find the width of the panes. Remove the rubber from the squeegee channel and mark the channel at the width of your windows. Using your hacksaw, cut the channel to length. Use a screwdriver to loosen the squeegee handle and re-center the handle on the channel. Take a file and remove any burrs or sharp edges from the end of the channel. Re-insert the squeegee rubber and trim off excess.

Once your custom cut squeegee is completed, simply use a window cleaning applicator and your favorite window cleaning solution, scrub the panes and squeegee off the water starting at the top and pull down to the bottom. After you finish a section, take a dry towel and wipe off any excess water left on the grids.

The Karate Kid Method

Orange and white microfiber towels used for cleaning French panes

Microfiber towels are a great alternative to paper towels and newspaper as they don’t leave a residue or lint behind

If you are familiar with this particular movie staple of the 80’s, you know where I’m going with this. This window cleaning technique is fast and effective. The only downside is it works best for windows that just need a touchup. Simply take two microfiber towels, one dampened with glass cleaner such as Sprayway, and one dry towel. Working both hands, scrub with the damp cloth, buff dry with the other towel. Repeat until you are finished and ready to welcome guests. This technique will be the best for people whom don’t like going through the hassle of cutting a squeegee and getting physical.

The Pay A Professional Method

More important tasks to complete other than windows? There are people you can call to take the burden off of your shoulders.

Of course if you just don’t want to deal with the windows, there are friendly folks who make a living making your headache go away. For a fee, a Professional Window Cleaner can knock out your windows in a fraction of the time it would take you. The only caveat is, make sure they are licensed and insured. Do you live near Yucaipa or Palm Desert? You can have the author of this informative blog come out personally and eliminate this daunting task. If not, a quick search of Google or Bing can get you the results you need.

Well I hope this article can help you find the solution to your french pane cleaning situation. Feel free to email or comment any tips of your own or any subject you would like to discuss, my knowledge is your knowledge!
