Covid-19 (Coronavirus), how can window washing make a difference?

Windows are one of the most commonly touched surfaces in a home.

The sudden explosion of coronavirus in the United States has a lot of people in a state of panic. One of the big questions is, how can you kill the coronavirus? The EPA has a list of cleaners and chemicals that meet their guidelines. As the owner of a cleaning company here in Palm Springs, I’ve been on a quest to find out how Window Cleaners can do their part. I’ve scoured the EPA’s list to determine what I can add to my window washing solution.

How does Window Cleaning relate to the Coronavirus?

Coronavirus and other contaminants can be removed from a window panes surface through the window cleaning process.

Windows, sliding glass doors, screens, and shower doors receive constant contact from hands. They are also subjected to misting of saliva via coughing and sneezing. Screens are notorious collectors of dirt and germs. Covid-19 or the coronavirus is spread through droplets released from coughing or sneezing onto surfaces. People touch these surfaces, then their faces, food, and introduce the virus to their system. This can be detrimental to the residents here in Rancho Mirage and Indian Wells. These communities have a high percentage of seniors. Cleaning these items is the responsibility of your Window Washer.

The Possible Solutions

My research has compelled me to experiment with quaternary ammonia, Metrex Cavicide, and sodium hypochlorite. Each has their advantages and disadvantages.

Quaternary Ammonia

Quaternary ammonium is one of the chemicals that meets the EPA’s guidelines to kill the coronavirus

Quaternary ammonia is safe to use in regards to skin contact, and vapors being inhaled. Unfortunately quaternary ammonia isn’t safe for tinted windows. Quaternary ammonia can cause window tint discoloration and eventual release.

Sodium Hypochlorite

sodium hypochlorite or bleach used to kill the coronavirus

sodium hypochlorite or bleach can be used to kill many viruses and bacteria, including the coronavirus

Sodium Hypochlorite is one of the most effective disinfectants. Also known as bleach, sodium hypochlorite kills viruses and bacteria in a fraction of a second. It’s no wonder it is used in a variety of household cleaning agents. The problems with adding bleach to a window cleaning solution are pretty significant. For one, the smell. Bleach has an odor that not everyone finds pleasant. Too much bleach can render an area temporarily uninhabitable. The other problem with using sodium hypochlorite in a window cleaner is the runoff created when using a squeegee to clean the glass. Bleach on carpet and interior paint can have devastating effects.

Metrex Cavicide

Metrex Cavicide recently approved to kill the coronavirus by the EPA

Metrex Cavicide is a disinfectant used to sanitize non-porous surfaces in hospital operating rooms and medical offices.

Metrex Cavicide is a antiviral disinfectant used in medical procedure settings. It can effectively kill viruses such as MRSA, HIV, Hepatitis, and yes Covid-19 also known as the coronavirus. Metrex Cavicide can be used on a multitude of smooth, non-porous surfaces including glass, steel, aluminum, plastic, and porcelain. It is a slight irritant to breathing and skin, it is recommended to wear gloves during application.
