Gutter Cleaning Methods Explained

Gutter cleaning in Indian Wells, California

Looks like it’s that time again, gutter cleaning time!

Gutter cleaning methods are pretty straightforward, scoop out, bag debris, and done right? Well what if I told you that there are ways to make this job quicker and easier? Sure the tried and true scoop and bag strategy will work, but have you considered a leaf blower? Have you heard of a Gutter Rocket for downspouts?

The Gutter Scoop

Of all the gutter scoops available, this has been the most effective and sturdy.

Scooping is the most common gutter cleaning method used by homeowners. The tools are cheap, effective, and require little skill set. You can use this tool a couple different ways. One way is to set up a ladder, climb up to your gutters, and scoop debris into a bucket or bag. Another way is to get on your roof, put your gutter scoop on an extension pole, and scoop from a standing position. Both of these gutter cleaning methods require a ladder. Scooping with a pole, standing on your roof will be faster, but definitely adds risk. You can buy your own gutter scoop here.

Using A leaf Blower

A leaf blower such as this Ryobi 18 volt hand held leaf blower can cut gutter cleaning time in half.

This common power tool might already be in your garage. Most homeowners normally use a leaf blower to clear their yard and driveway. You can also wield this versatile tool to clear your gutters. Simply walk along your gutters and blow debris out. Of course this isn’t always the ideal gutter cleaning method, after all you will have to rake up below. You will however, be spared precious time stuck on a ladder. Another caveat is implementing this technique on wet material, which can lead to a big mess.

The Gutter Rocket

The Gutter Rocket and similar tools can make gutter and downspout clearing a blast.

This last item is great for downspouts or gutters that have gutter guards. The pictured tool above is powered by a garden hose, although you can purchase versions that operate off a pressure washer. The gutter rocket has a forward facing jet to break up clogs, and several rear facing jets to propel it forward. Of course this can create a mess, but if you’re dealing with a clog it can be a lifesaver.
